It's all change on "The Tourist" once more!
05 November 2009
There are some projects that just appear doomed from the outset before a single frame is captured in earnest…and then there‘s "The Tourist" – a production that has recently been forced to install a revolving door marked ‘talent‘ in the lobby. With original director Bharat Nalluri and stars Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron having already skipped town, two of their replacements have decided to cite that old chestnut of ‘creative differences‘ and flee the scene too. Sam Worthington has decided that he‘d rather just sit back and watch his star ascend post "Avatar" and "Clash of The Titans" than get mixed up with this one. Likewise, replacement director Florian von Donnersmarck ("The Lives of Others") fell out with producers after discovering the direction this one was going in (south I presume?).
That leaves just Angelina Jolie (Theron‘s substitute) keeping the sheets warm…which does get one to thinking. Could it be that Jolie has been driving away her colleagues like she‘s been driving away warm reactions to her latest film, "Salt"? Apparently, her Agent–On–The–Run effort is shaping up to be a turkey but whatever the reasons behind "The Tourist‘s" travails it would appear people are still willing to take a risk and join forces with Jolie.
According to Variety, Worthington will be replaced by Johnny Depp (not bad) in the lead role of ‘an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who‘s a suspected global criminal.‘ Jolie is the suspected criminal, obviously. Producers will be practically giddy thanks to Depp‘s signing – the mega pairing with Jolie undoubtedly will put the hurt locker on the Box Office.
Meanwhile, Alfonso Cuaron ("Children Of Men") is eyeing up the project and could replace von Donnersmarck. Either way, whoever takes over "The Tourist" will be tasked with keeping the ship steady enough in order for ‘actual‘ filming to take place!

Jolie rescues "The Tourist"
13 October 2009
Say what you will about "The Tourist", you just can‘t keep this troubled production down. This Hitchcockian thriller was set to star Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron but both megawatt stars have since pulled out for reasons unknown. When Cruise bailed his vacant post was filled by the seemingly ubiquitous Sam Worthington – the "Terminator Salvation" star is on an impressive run of late and is busy attaching himself to every new property out there. But what to do about Theron‘s recent retreat? Well, the producers have replaced one Hollywood hottie with another. Simple really. Angelina Jolie, who recently finished work on the spy thriller "Salt", will join the cast of the film, which The Hollywood Reporter describes as focusing on "an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who‘s a suspected global criminal". In an interesting twist, Jolie will play the mysterious ‘former lover‘ of this equation with Worthington playing the man out to ensnare his former squeeze. So, will "The Tourist" finally be able to take off? Well, it‘s not out of customs just yet with the film still directionless as Bharat Nalluri ("Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day") has skipped town and the producers are now frantically in search for a new helmer. Oh dear.

Theron joining Cruise in "The Tourist "
04 November 2008
Charlize Theron ("Hancock") is negotiating to star with Tom Cruise in "The Tourist", the Bharat Nalluri–directed remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer.
In the Julian Fellowes–scripted drama, Theron will play a female Interpol agent who uses an American tourist in an attempt to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.
Production is expected to begin by March. The script is currently getting a polish by Christopher McQuarrie, who co–wrote the upcoming Cruise starrer "Valkyrie" for United Artists.
Spyglass principals Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman will produce with Canal Plus.

George Clooney turns to tourism
12 June 2008
Well, when you‘ve conquered the movie world thanks to a large dose of charm, guile and unabashed talent then it‘s unsurprising that George Clooney has turned to tourism to take over the holiday market. OK, so that‘s not strictly true but the Cloonster will potentially topline "The Tourist" for Warner Bros. according to trade mag Variety.
Already on board the project is Anthony Peckham ("Don‘t Say a Word") to adapt Olen Steinhauer‘s novel for the big screen with Clooney earmarked to play the lead as a spy embroiled in an international conspiracy.
"The Tourist" is a contemporary thriller about a spy who risks everything to reveal a conspiracy after he‘s accused of a murder he didn‘t commit. So a bit like "The Fugitive" meets "Spy Games"…without the one–armed man obviously.
