Mickey Rourke provides a first look at Whiplash!
10 June 2009
USA Today have teamed up with ScreenRant to exclusively reveal the first pic of Mickey Rourke as the villainous Whiplash in Jon Favreau‘s "Iron Man 2".
The pic sees Rourke, replete with a retro–engineered Iron Man suit, gate–crashing the Monico Grand Prix. His suit has a few snazzy accessories including two electronically–charged whips – hence the name and hence the debris strewn all about his person as Whiplash takes care of a few racecars.
When commenting on the villain‘s tech specs Favreau had this to say; "The technologies are definitely related, and that‘s part of the core theme of the film."
The character‘s alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who, Favreau says, "has constructed his own version of a suit." Simply put, and in the words of Rourke himself, Whiplash "is going to light them up."
"Iron Man 2" gets its release on May 7, 2010. Rourke stars with Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Favreau, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling and Kate Mara in the blockbuster sequel.

Favreau Tweets on "Iron Man 2" set
07 May 2009
If director Jon Favreau‘s frequent Tweets are anything to go by then the burly helmer is having a lot of fun on the set of his superhero sequel, "Iron Man 2". Our guess is the man must be pinching himself every time he steps on set, as the director, who was previously responsible for festive hit "Elf", guided Marvel‘s "Iron Man" to critical plaudits and global Box Office success last summer! And now Favreau‘s back and helping to shape Shellhead‘s return with the assistance of the returning Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and a few, interesting new faces. The below is the latest rundown of Favreau‘s choice Tweets from his "Iron Man 2" Twitter page, including the on–set debut of a certain buxom megastar! May 1: "Wrecking the joint. Not much left of the set. Broken stuff everywhere. Should look cool on screen." May 4: "More suited destruction today. Rigging a big gag with lots of cameras." May 4: "ILM on set today. Doing a mix of practical suits and Imocap, their version of on set motion capture developed originally for Pirates 2." May 6: "Scarlett‘s (Johansson) first day on set in the Black Widow outfit. You‘ve never heard a crew get so quiet so fast." May 6: "Now shooting first scene with Tony Stark and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)"

First pic from "Iron Man 2" released
01 May 2009
The countdown for "Iron Man 2" officially starts now! Yes, Paramount Pictures and director Jon Favreau have released the very first, official, pic for superhero sequel "Iron Man 2". USA Today were on hand to unveil the shot, which features Robert Downey Jr‘s Tony Stark surrounded by the fruits of his techno labours.
Alongside the new shot Favreau dropped the following comment to USA Today; "How many superheroes are open about their true identities? We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences — in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore."
It looks like we can expect a ‘darker‘ outing for Stark this time around with his openness and public extravagance coming back to bite him!

Mickey Rourke back in "Iron Man 2"
12 March 2009
The little soap opera that was Mickey Rourke‘s ‘will he, won‘t he‘ involvement in "Iron Man 2" has finally, and conclusively, come to a close. We hope. The bone of contention for Rourke and his agent was the fact that Marvel were only willing to pay "The Wrestler" star a fraction of his going rate to play the Russian supervillain in the blockbuster sequel.
According to reports, Rourke has managed to negotiate a substantially higher fee to play Whiplash – an amalgamation of sorts between the character and Crimson Dynamo, another ill–tempered Russian baddie. Variety reports that the deal is very much sealed and Rourke will join up with Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow et al when "Iron Man 2" starts shooting in April.
Interestingly, Rourke was, according to rumour, offered a role in "Spider–Man 4" by Sony before signing on for "Iron Man 2" – perhaps this was used as a handy bargaining tool? It‘s not known what role in Spidey Rourke was presented with but we can assume it was another bad guy – Mobius the Living Vampire anyone?
This is a day of good news for director Jon Favreau as Scarlett Johansson has too confirmed her place in proceedings by taking up the offered role of superspy Natasha Romanoff, who doubles as the villainess Black Widow. Her representative told E! Online that she is "thrilled" to be a part of the project.

Mickey Rourke rules himself out of "Iron Man 2"
19 February 2009
The ‘will he, won‘t he‘ saga of "The Wrestler" star Mickey Rourke and his proposed involvement as a villain in Marvel‘s "Iron Man 2" appears to finally be drawing to a close, albeit a rather acrimonious close.
"Right now, we‘re not doing Iron Man 2," Rourke told New York Magazine – simply and categorically. But why drop out of the running when things were once looking so rosy? Well, rumour has it that Marvel offered the Oscar–nominated star only $250,000 for a role facing off against Robert Downey Jr‘s. Iron Man. Quite rightly, the offer was deemed quite paltry for a name such as Rourke, an undeniably talented, if somewhat unpredictable, actor.
This wouldn‘t be the first time that Marvel‘s frugal plan has landed them in hot water and sans actors. Terence Howard was reportedly pushed from "Iron Man 2" due to the size of his wage, with many outlets suggesting that his pay packet was greater than anyone else‘s on set – including the main event, RDJ. Either way, Howard was forced out of the role of Rhodey and was replaced by Don Cheadle.
Rourke won‘t be out of work for long though as he has recently signed on to Sly Stallone‘s all–star action fest "The Expendables", which is due to start shooting very soon.

Johansson to take on "Iron Man" too?
16 February 2009
Hmmmm. Curiouser and curiouser. What with Emily Blunt taking a step back from the role of Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff, AKA the Black Widow, in Jon Favreau‘s "Iron Man 2", the trade mags were scrambling to find an appropriately starry name to attach to this blockbuster sequel. Enter Entertainment Weekly and one Miss. Scarlett Johansson. EW is reporting that the "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" star is set to lend her (ahem) ample assets to the Black Widow in a bid to take on Robert Downey Jr‘s. Tin Man.
Blunt‘s commitment to 20th Century Fox and the studio‘s upcoming "Gulliver‘s Travels" is the main sticking point and the thing that looks likely to put paid to her involvement here. Apparently, Blunt‘s ‘people‘ are trying to make both projects work for their star but it may be a case of too much too soon for Blunt as "Travels" is due to start shooting on April 15th.
So, with rumours that Johansson has already met with Marvel representatives, could her new brunette look, as sported at the World Premiere of "He‘s Just Not That Into You", be in fact a cunning ploy to show that she can indeed adapt to the comic character? She‘s a wily one that Miss. Johansson.

Rourke not the Crimson Dynamo says Robert Downey Jr.!
05 February 2009
It‘s time for fan boys everywhere to cool their jets I‘m afraid. The initially mouth–watering prospect of seeing "The Wrestler" star Mickey Rourke take on the role of the Crimson Dynamo in the forthcoming "Iron Man 2" has been roundly pooh–poohed. But who would shatter our dreams in such a way? Well, none other than Shell Head himself, Robert Downey Jr. RDJ, speaking to MTV News, categorically denied these reports but did leave a few hints to suggest the door is still open for Rourke.
"That‘s actually incorrect," said Downey Jr. when asked if Rourke was being considered for the aforementioned rogue. However, when pressed, with a rather harsh light shone in his eyes, as to whether or not Rourke may be appearing in the film as big bad Whiplash instead, another potential villain, Iron Man had a more cryptic response.
"I can neither confirm nor deny that," said Downey Jr. "Or maybe it‘s some semblance of both. Here, I can tell you everything about the story except I won‘t give away the ending. The nerd stuff is top–drawer security."
Expect more on this story soon! The said ‘nerd stuff‘, i.e. "Iron Man 2", is scheduled for a May 7, 2010 release.

Forget Kate - Blunt is latest Brit hope
15 January 2009
Rumours are rife in tinseltown that our very own Emily Blunt has been sounded out for Jon Favreau‘s "Iron Man" sequel. If Variety is to be believed, the twenty–five year–old is in contention to fill the skintight costume of Russian femme fatale Black Widow.
As if the prospect of lining up alongside Robert Downey Jr wasn‘t enough, 2009 is set to be a very exciting year for the Londoner. After notable appearances in "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Charlie Wilson‘s War in recent years, Blunt looks set to seal her rise to stardom with lead roles in the Scorsese–produced period drama "The Young Victoria", as well as opposite Benicio del Toro in "The Wolf Man".
Marvel declined to comment on casting, but adding Blunt to the potent array of talent already confirmed can only enhance the interest in Paramount‘s latest franchise. Expect to see this summer tentpole lighting up multiplexes in May next year.

Marvel Irons out villains for superhero sequel
08 January 2009
Wildman Mickey Rourke, who is currently receiving plenty of plaudits for his performance in "The Wrestler", and the legend that is Sam Rockwell ("Frost/Nixon") are both in talks with Marvel over starring in "Iron Man 2".
Rourke is being lined up to play Russian bad boy The Crimson Dynamo, who gets his mitts on a nuclear powered suit, while Rockwell will play Tony Stark‘s rival industrialist, Justin Hammer.
Fortunately for all concerned, director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey Jr are both signed on for the sequel, after the first movie took an impressive $581 million worldwide.
Gwyneth Paltrow will also return as Pepper Potts, while Don Cheadle steps into Terrence Howard‘s shoes as Rhodey.
Paramount is eyeing a 2010 release date.

Terrence Howard told to hit the Rhodey for "Iron Man 2"
20 October 2008
Yes, times really are hard! This global credit crunch is even affecting the roles of certain A–listers on the mega–budgeted blockbusters! Last week it was reported that Terrence Howard was told to ‘do one‘ by Marvel Studios from their "Iron Man" franchise. Of course, Howard played Tony Stark‘s right hand man, James "Rhodey" Rhodes but after receiving his Pink Slip the role will now go to Don Cheadle ("Swordfish", "Reign Over Me").
Apparently, the first that Howard had heard of this casting decision was via the news feeds with the rest of us! Talking to NPR for the Weekend Edition, Howard stated that "It was the surprise of a lifetime…there was no explanation. [The contract] just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren‘t worth the paper that they‘re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren‘t kept, and good faith negotiations aren‘t always held up."
The news comes as a blow to an otherwise untarnished hit for Marvel and Paramount. "Iron Man" proved to be one of the critical and commercial hits of the year making Howard‘s forced departure even more perplexing. Many fans were looking forward to seeing Howard‘s Rhodey step in to the suit of War Machine and fight side–by–side with Iron Man but now it would appear that honour will befall Cheadle instead.

Terrence Howard is stepping down for "Iron Man" sequel
14 October 2008
Terrence Howard has decided not to reprise his role as Col. James Rhodey for the sequel to "Iron Man". Instead, Don Cheadle will step in to replace him for Marvel Studios‘ "Iron Man 2", according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Marvel Studios had no comment on motives why Howard stepped down, but sources close to the agreement said discussions with Howard fell through due to financial differences, among other reasons.
Howard fans will be surprised and should expect the role of Rhodey to take a different direction for the sequel.
Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay for "Iron Man 2", while Jon Favreau is returning as director. Robert Downey Jr. is expected to come back as Stark/Iron Man and Gwyneth Paltrow is likely to be back as Pepper Potts.

Work begins on "Iron Man 2"
22 August 2008
Before the heady days of "The Dark Knight" there was one comic book adaptation burning brightly at our multiplexes. The hero of the hour was of course Jon Favreau‘s "Iron Man". With Tin Head amassing a massive amount of readies at the Global Box Office, Paramount was quick to bankroll a sequel with Favreau already planning ahead for the uber–budgeted sequel. The director chatted to The Los Angeles Times recently to reveal that work has already started on "Iron Man 2"!!!
"We‘re working on it now," he said, "which hasn‘t been officially announced. It will be released in 2010." Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures are targeting an April 30, 2010 release date in order, just like the original, to be the first film to kick–off the summer season.
Justin Theroux ("Tropic Thunder") is writing the script and in addition to the man himself Robert Downey Jr., co–stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard are expected to return to the fold.
