"This Is It" storms to the top of the UK Chart!
03 November 2009
This really was a foregone conclusion. Having partied long into the night thanks to last week‘s World Premiere event, "Michael Jackson‘s This Is It" has taken full advantage of the subsequent media storm to pocket a cool £4.8 million over a five–day opening weekend. That was easily enough to oust "Up" from the top spot! After three weeks at the top of the UK Chart, Disney/Pixar‘s astonishing tale finally relinquishes the crown and falls down to number 2 this week. Digging its paws in at number 3 is Wes Anderson‘s quirky update of Roald Dahl‘s "Fantastic Mr. Fox" whilst Jigsaw may already be packing up his toys and heading home as "Saw VI" drops two places to 4.

Another non–mover at 5 is the so–so "Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire‘s Assistant". Proving that vampires may no longer be in vogue but can just about raise the dead…and a modicum of interest. Adapted from Darran Shan‘s popular series of novels, "Cirque Du Freak" managed to best Vince Vaughn‘s "Couples Retreat" over the Halloween weekend. The ensemble comedy plunges down to number 6. The second of our new entries comes in the form of the melancholy bundle of joy that is "9". Disappointingly debuting at number 7 thanks to a £460,000 take, Shane Acker‘s gorgeous–looking animation couldn‘t quite make a Box Office impact akin to its startling visuals. Also floundering a little is festival favourite "An Education" at 8. Praised for Carey Mulligan‘s central performance, this coming–of–age drama could only muster £400,000 in its opening weekend.

And making up the numbers this week is gothic treat "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" at 9 as Terry Gilliam‘s well–received effort finds itself sharing the lower bunk with Danny Dyer, 50 Cent and "Dead Man Running" at 10.

Jacko's "This Is It" proves a real Thriller!
02 November 2009
With only one new release scaring up business over the Halloween weekend, the going was not as tough as expected for "Michael Jackson‘s This Is It". On a limited run, although after this morning‘s figures that‘s sure to change, "This Is It" managed to scoop up $32.5 million over a five–day stretch. That was comfortably enough to claim the top spot but will go down as something as a disappointment for the much–hyped concert show.

The main attraction in this week‘s House of Horrors is still, surely, the low budget frightener that is "Paranormal Activity". Last week‘s No. 1 falls one place to 2 and is nearing the $100 million mark! Actually climbing one spot to 3 is the fairly well–received thriller, "Law Abiding Citizen". The Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx–starring vehicle has crawled past the $50 million mark after three weeks on general release. Also reclaiming ground in the Box Office fight is "Couples Retreat". Vince Vaughn‘s guffawing getaway finds itself at number 4 this week. Despite the season for such fare, "Saw VI" has seemingly scared away its audience as Jigsaw falls three places to 5!

Down at 6 this week is the stunningly realised "Where The Wild Things Are" from director Spike Jonze. Falling three places, this adaptation of Maurice Sendak‘s beloved story still managed to get the better of Sony‘s Single White Male, "The Stepfather". The Dylan Walsh–starring effort is down to 7 this week. "Astro Boy", the all–CGI affair based on the popular kids TV show, is finding life almost unbearable in the Chart as it falls once more to 8 having made just $10 million from two weeks.

Having expanded into more theatres, "Amelia", starring Hilary Swank, has climbed three places to 9 following some early Oscar–buzz for its leading lady. And already taking itself out of the equation after just two weeks on release is "Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire‘s Assistant", which falls all the way down to 10.

"This Is It" - you can't "Beat It"

It would seem that Michael Jackson is breaking records from beyond the grave as his docu–film "This Is It", a dramatisation of the singer‘s last months leading up to his much anticipated live concerts, has racked up some astonishing presale figures.

Fans have been lining up to purchase tickets for advanced screenings of the Sony pic, which is set to open on October 27 this year. Some desperate fans even resorted to camping out at the Nokia Plaza in Los Angeles on Thursday night in a bid to secure tickets, which reportedly sold out within the first two hours of going on sale. In fact, "This Is It" managed to account for almost 80 per cent of all online ticketing sales in the U.S. within its first 24 hours of release, dominating other presale figures reported for popular upcoming titles such as "Avatar" and "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."

The L.A. showings are the first engagement at Regal‘s new L.A. Live Cinemas and the Jackson film will show on all of its 14 screens.

In London, Vue Entertainment‘s film–buying director Stuart Boreman claimed that the pic sold more than 30,000 tickets, eclipsing advance buying in the U.K. for films like "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "I‘ve never seen anything like it in the 25 years I have been film buying," Boreman said. "It‘s a true phenomenon, and sales show no sign of slowing down."

Elsewhere, Japanese theatres have recorded more than $1 million in ticket sales within the first 24 hours while sell–outs also occurred in France, Australia, Germany and New Zealand. We can only hope that with all the build up that fans are in for a thriller!
