Have you ever wondered what happens to charming criminal types after they‘ve outwitted the law and sailed off with their ill–gotten gains? We assume they live happily ever after but what if, like Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan), living like a king on a Caribbean island all becomes a bit boring? Despite having a stunning – and equally crooked – girlfriend (Salma Hayek) as well as a small fortune after stealing two of the most valuable diamonds in the world, Max misses the buzz he used to get from executing the perfect heist. So when the FBI agent (Woody Harrelson) he humiliated during his final raid comes to town and a ship displaying another priceless gem docks in port, can he resist temptation?
Effortlessly enjoyable and so laid back it‘s almost vertical, this movie boasts some seriously sexy Caribbean cool. With his shirt either permanently undone or off, Brosnan looks like he could adjust to the pace of island life while Hayek spends so much time wandering around in her bikini that she could quite easily have shot a calendar in breaks between filming. Even Woody and Naomie Harris (28 Days Later) get in on the act, as bare flesh threatens to divert all the attention away from the actual plot which, despite a need for a certain suspension of disbelief, is still entertaining enough. Don Cheadle also turns up – minus the awful English accent he used in Ocean‘s Eleven – as a local gangster, rounding off a more than reasonable cast who have done director Brett Ratner proud and make After The Sunset a fun and sun–soaked adventure which should help banish those winter blues.
And having finally ended his tenure as 007, it looks like Pierce may have found his new niche here and in "The Thomas Crown Affair" as a gentleman thief and with him playing the role so smoothly, long may it continue.
